Symbol ’24: Icons for Society: Past, Present & Future – an international conference

About Symbol ’24: Icons for Society: Past, Present & Future – an international conference

Over two days, speakers from Belgium, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Great Britain, France, India, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the USA will present fascinating backgrounds, aspects and perspectives in the context of pictorial symbols of all kinds.

Among them Scott E. Fahlman, who "invented" the :-), emoji activist Jennifer 8. Lee, Paul Mijksenaar, grand seigneur of orientation systems, and Juli Gudehus, pioneer of a new global visual language. 2024 will be the 40th anniversary of Susan Kare's designs for Apple Macintosh's groundbreaking screen icons and 42 years since Scott Fahlman introduced his emoticons. Few could have predicted how much a part of our everyday lives emoticons, emoji and icons would become. It is hard to grasp the extent to which they are now used to facilitate communication in fields such as science, health and medicine. This two-day conference will bring together academics, researchers, historians and design practitioners from a wide range of industries to present research and applications showing how icons are used to communicate in their fields, and to discuss the future of icons on screen, in print and in the environment. The Symbol Group is a group of people from around the world who work on or with symbols, pictograms, icons, emoticons and other signs in very different ways, and will be formed by the end of 2022. This virtual conference of the Symbol Group is hosted by the British Academy, London.
